The Holy Spirit. Active Force or a Person?

This is a follow-up article that goes along with a previous one I wrote called "Explaining the Trinity (on Jesus Christ's Behalf)". In that article, you can see scripturally, proof that Jesus Christ is not just a man or even a created being, but in part...God Almighty. So many people have questions, and are fooled into false doctrines of what the Trinity truly is, that they deny the deity of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Before you go any further, you need to understand this.....

If I were in a room with 50 other people named Michael, and you walked in and started talking and said, "Michael, I have a question for you", the question becomes, to whom are you speaking? See those in the room are all called Michael, and answer to it. You would not be addressing me until you clarify your question by adding in my whole name. I am Michael Harris. When you address the room full of people that way, I would know you were speaking to me. I would pay you no attention until you did. God is no different. Satan has created a deceptive lie that as long as you pray to or honor God in some way, all worship, prayer, and good deeds go to the same and only God. That could not be further from the truth. If you do not have the right God, then you are praying, talking, and serving a false god. If Jesus Christ is not part of God in your belief, you deny His deity and have the wrong god, not YHWH, the God, the One spoken of in the Bible. Likewise, if you deny the Holy Spirit as part of God in your belief, you deny His deity as well, and have the wrong god, not YHWH, the God, the One spoken of in the Bible. Now before you start talking about a Triune God being Pagan, non-Biblical, etc, I will again point you to the article "Explaining the Trinity (on Jesus Christ's Behalf", which blows those theories completely out of the water.

In this article, we are focusing on the Holy Spirit. Some religions like the Jehovah's Witnesses say the Holy Spirit is just some form of active force and nothing else. They say that the Holy Spirit is not part of God, but a tool of God. Others have this same view. The definition of God Almighty would be the One who is called God, created everything, is prayed to, is worshipped, is eternal, etc. These people will claim that as a spirit, the Holy Spirit is not a person, thus cannot be a part of God. We need to understand, God Himself is not a person as we envision a person, God is also a spirit...

John 4:24 (KJV)

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

People look at God and say He is a person for certain attributes He has. The Holy Spirit is no different. When you look at Scripture, you will see that the Holy Spirit is separate from God the Father, yet part of God, YHWH. Let's look at some scripture that shows the Holy Spirit is a person...

Acts 5:3-4 (KJV)

"But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God."

Look closely and you see that the Holy Spirit is actually called God! Certainly Peter, a Jew, knew there was only one God, YHWH, and that being the case, referred to the Holy Spirit as God. No-one is called God except, God right? He shares His glory with no-one.

1 Corinthians 2:10-11 (KJV)

"But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. "

In these two verses, we see the Holy Spirit searches the heart. Who else can do that besides God? No-one and nothing! We also see that through this, the Holy Spirit is all know. That is an attribute of God.

Hebrews 9:14 (KJV)

"How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"

Clearly this shows the Holy Spirit as eternal. Who is eternal except God? No-one or nothing, yet Scripture shows us that the Holy Spirit is eternal. No beginning and no end. More proof of his personhood and deity.

Job 26:13 (KJV)

"By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent"

If you turn in to your Bible to the very first chapter of Genesis, who is the creator of all things? God Almighty. We see above in Job, the Spirit is called the Creator. The Holy Spirit is the Creator called out in this verse because He is a person, and part of God.

Acts 8:29 (KJV)

"Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot."

Acts 10:19 (KJV)

"While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee."

Acts 11:13 (KJV)

"And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house:"

Acts 13:2 (KJV)

"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them."

In each of the verses above, the Holy Spirit speaks. An active force does not speak. One with the qualities of a person DOES speak though. If the Holy Spirit were just some force that was a tool of God, it would not talk, and would not direct.

2nd Corinthians 13:14 (KJV)

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen."

We are told of fellowship and communion with the Holy Spirit. Why would God have us commune with anyone but himself? We are His children and belong to Him. He is a jealous God and will not share with any created being, including angels.

Romans 8:27 (KJV)

"And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."

Only God can search the mind and know what is on it. That is a sign of being omniscient, of which only God Almighty is. Also notice He (the Holy Spirit) makes intercession. To intercede, you must have the characteristics of a person, not some active force, or created being. The Holy Spirit can intercede to the other two who make up God (God the Father and Jesus) because He is part of God.

1st Corinthians 2:13 (KJV)

"Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."

Luke 12:12

"For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. "

The Holy Spirit teaches! No active force would be able to teach. Do we have any "active forces" in our classrooms teaching school? How about on the job? Any trainers out there active forces? Of course not. To teach, you have to have the characteristics associated with being a person!

Ephesians 4:30 (KJV)

"And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

The Holy Spirit can be grieved! That means the Holy Spirit has feelings. No active force could be grieved as feelings are a sign of being a person.

Luke 12:10 (KJV)

"And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven."

Mark 3:28-29 (KJV)

"Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation."

Notice that the unforgivable sin is blasphemy against the holy Spirit! Why and how can one blasphemy against the Holy Spirit if the Holy Spirit were only an active force? Why would God have that sin more detrimental than any other? Plain and simple...the Holy Spirit is part of God. There are three essences of God in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I tell you again, should you deny the personage and deity of any one of them, you are NOT following the God of the Bible, YHWH, the Creator of all things. The beginning and the end. The Alpha and the Omega. Scripture is inspired and it is through this inspiration God has left us His words. So many rely on uninspired teachings such as the Watchtower and the Book of Mormon that are not inspired, and sadly, hold to them when there is a contradiction. Proof of the Triune God is undeniable, and there is no salvation except through the correct God. YHWH.

In His Grace,

                 Mike
